1 St. Justin Martyr
Martyr in Rome; c 167. "After the saints had been taken prisoner, they were led to the Roman prefect, Rusticus.... He said, 'So you imagine that you are going to heaven and will receive some appropriate reward?' Justin replied, 'I do not imagine. I know; I am certain.' Rusticus said, 'You must sacrifice to the gods.' And Justin said: 'No one in his right mind would turn away from the true God to worship false gods.' The prefect insisted: 'Unless you do as you are told, you will be tortured without mercy.' Justin said, 'We have prayed that we may suffer for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.'"

Also called Columcille. Abbot of Iona; 597. "From his boyhood Colum Cille devoted himself to the Christian combat and to the search for wisdom. By God's grace he preserved purity of body of soul, so that he seemed like one ready for the life of heaven though still on earth; for in apearance he was like an angel, refined in speech, holy in works, pre-eminent in character, great in counsel. In his forty-second year he sailed away from Ireland to Britain, wishing to be a pilgrim for Christ. During his thirty-four years as a soldier of Christ on Iona, he could not even let one hour pass that was not given to prayer or reading or writing or some other good work." (From The Life of Columba by St. Adamnan.) One of theTwelve Apostles of Ireland.

22 St. Alban
First Martyr in Britain; c 304. "Whilst still a pagan he gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing from his persecutors. When Alban saw the holy man spending all his time in prayer and vigils, he was touched by the grace of God. He was moved to follow the priest's example, and began to emulate his faith and devotion. Soon, however, word got out that Alban was sheltering a Christian, and when the soldiers arrived to search the house, Alban dressed himself in the priest's clothes and gave himself up in the place of his guest and teacher." (From the Venerable Bede)

27 St. Cyril of Alexandria
Bishop & Doctor of the Church; 444. Had an important role at the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus, where he fought the Nestorian heresy. "That anyone could doubt the right of the holy Virgin to be called the Mother of God fills me with astonishment. Surely she must be the Mother of God if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, and she gave birth to him! Our Lord's disciples may not have used those exact words, but they delivered to us the belief those words enshrine, and this has also been taught us by the holy fathers.... the divinely inspired Scriptures affirm that the Word of God was made flesh.... Yet he is nonetheless one, the one true Son, both God and man; not a deified man, but true God." (From a letter by St. Cyril.)
28 St. Irenaeus of Lyons
Bishop of Lyons & Father of the Church; c 202.
