March

1 St. David
Also called Dewi. Abbot Bishop; Menevia, Wales; c 562. Son of St. Non. "At the hour of Matins, the Lord Jesus deigned to bestow his presence for the consolation of the father (David). When he saw him, he altogether rejoiced in spirit. 'Take me,' said he, 'after thee!' With these words he gave back his life to God, Christ being his companion, and, accompanied by the angelic hosts, he went to the abodes of heaven. 'By whom shall we be taught?' exclaimed his disciples. 'By whom shall we be aided?' grieved the pilgrims. 'By whom shall we be appointed, corrected, and established?' despaired the kings." (Life of St. David, by Rhygyrach the Wise.)
2 St. Chad
Bishop; Lichfield; 672. Brother of St. Cedd. "Chad, being consecrated bishop, began immediately to devote himself to ecclesiastical truth and to chastity; to apply himself to humility, continence, and study; to travel about, not on horseback, but after the manner of the Apostles, on foot, to preach the Gospel in towns, the open country, cottages, villages, and castles; for he was one of the disciples of St. Aidan, and endeavored to instruct his people, by the same actions and behavior, according to his example." (The Venerable Bede).

5 St. Kieran of Saigher
Bishop Abbot; Co. Offaly, Ireland; c 552. One of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

9 St. Gregory of Nyssa
Bishop and Doctor of the Church; c 394. Brother of St. Basil the Great, and one of the most prominent of the Fathers who attended the Second Ecumenical Council.
10
11 St. Aegnus the Culdee
Abbot of Clonenagh Abbey; 842. Originator of the Culdee movement and probably first compiler, in collaboration with St. Maelruan, of an Irish Calendar of Saints, and for obvious reasons the patron of this poor brother hagiographer.
12 St. Gregory of Rome
Bishop of Rome; 604. A truly holy man of God, inspired by love for his Lord and Church. "The servant of the Servants of God." A genuinely humble Bishop of Rome.

17 St. Patrick
Missionary Bishop; 465. "After I came to Ireland [as a slave], every day I had to tend sheep, and many times a day I prayed-- the love of God and his fear came to me more and more, and my faith was strengthened. And my spirit was so moved that in a single day I would say as many as a hundred prayers, and almost as many at night; and I used to get up for prayer before daylight, in snow, in frost, in rain, and I felt no harm, and there was no sloth in me--as I now see because the spirit in me was then fervent." (St. Patrick's Confession, Section 16.)
18 St. Cyril of Jerusalem
Bishop & Doctor of the Church; 386. One of the holy Fathers of the Second Ecumenical Council, where he fought Arianism, which denied the nature of Christ.
19 St. Joseph
Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Foster-father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
20 St. Cuthbert of LIndisfarne
Bishop of Lindisfarne; 687. "As bishop he followed the examples of the apostles, and enhanced his dignity by his holy actions, protecting his people by constant prayer and inspiring them to heavenly things by his salutary teachings. As is most valuable in a teacher, he first practiced whatever he taught. Above all else, he was afire with heavenly love, unassumingly patient, devoted to unceasing prayer, and kindly to all who came to him for comfort. He regarded the labour of helping the weaker brethren with advice as equivalent to prayer, remembering that he who said, 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God,' also said, 'Love thy neighbor.'" (The Venerable Bede, History of the English Church and People).
21 St. Enda of Aran
Abbot; circa 540. An ex-warrior, patriarch of Irish monasticism. According to Ryan in Irish Monasticism: "With Enda, as far as can be ascertained, monasticism in the strict sense (of embracing vows, complete seclusion from the world, and a stern system of discipline) began in Ireland. How much he adopted without change from his teachers at Candida Casa is not clear, but there is reason to believe he did not rest content with slavish imitation."
